Ballast Water Treatment System Installation Complete Across Entire Fleet

CS Tanker has completed the installation of IMO-approved Ballast Water Treatment Systems across all 36 vessels in the fleet, ahead of the regulatory deadline.
CS Tanker has completed the installation of IMO-approved Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS) across all 36 vessels in the fleet, ahead of the regulatory deadline set by the IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention. The programme, which began in 2019, represents a total investment of approximately $18 million and is a significant milestone in CS Tanker's environmental compliance programme.
Why Ballast Water Treatment Matters
Ballast water is taken on by vessels to maintain stability when not carrying cargo. When discharged in a different location, it can introduce invasive aquatic species — including bacteria, plants, and animals — that can devastate local marine ecosystems. The IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention requires all vessels to treat ballast water before discharge to prevent this environmental harm.
Technology Deployed
CS Tanker selected UV-based BWTS systems supplied by Optimarin for the majority of the fleet, with electrochlorination systems used on vessels where UV treatment was not technically feasible. All systems are IMO-approved and USCG-type approved, enabling CS Tanker vessels to operate in US waters without restriction. The installations were carried out during scheduled dry-docking periods to minimise operational disruption.
Ahead of Schedule
CS Tanker completed the BWTS installation programme approximately 18 months ahead of the regulatory deadline, reflecting our proactive approach to environmental compliance. By completing the programme early, we avoided the risk of vessels being unable to trade in certain jurisdictions and demonstrated to our clients that CS Tanker takes its environmental responsibilities seriously.
Part of the Green Shipping Initiative
The BWTS programme is one component of CS Tanker's Green Shipping Initiative, which also includes the EGCS scrubber installation programme, hull optimisation, and the evaluation of alternative fuels. Together, these initiatives position CS Tanker as one of the most environmentally responsible operators in the independent tanker sector.
Technical Management Statement
"Completing the BWTS programme across 36 vessels is a significant logistical achievement, and I am proud of the technical team that made it happen," said Elena Christodoulou, Head of Technical Management. "More importantly, it is the right thing to do for the marine environment. Invasive species are a serious ecological threat, and we are committed to doing our part to prevent their spread."
